Research
Predicting the Next Generation of Key Developers
A Dual Methodology Approach
2025
❗accepted for publication in ACM TOSEM
This research addresses the critical need to identify future key developers in software projects by introducing a novel predictive framework based on initial developer activities. To fill the gap in forecasting future roles rather than just identifying current ones, the study employs two distinct methodologies: one using established predictive models trained on technical and collaborative features inspired by sports analytics, and another utilizing neural embeddings and diachronic alignment to map the trajectory from inexperienced to experienced developer status. By evaluating these approaches across several open-source projects, we found that while individual models like Random Forest and specific alignment techniques were effective on their own, a combined approach yielded the highest predictive performance. Ultimately, this framework offers organizations a strategic tool to proactively recognize and nurture talent, ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of their software projects.
From Hydrogen Hype to Hydrogen Reality
A Horizon Scanning for the Business Opportunities
2023
This paper explores the current and future commercial viability of the hydrogen economy, driven by global pressures for decarbonization, energy security, and net-zero targets. Acknowledging that hydrogen is not a new phenomenon, the research investigates a wide array of business opportunities and company models across various international markets to determine which applications are currently commercially feasible versus those likely to become viable later. Through a broad horizon scanning of the value chain—covering both high and low carbon hydrogen—the study assesses the self-sustaining revenue potential of these ventures. The findings reveal that a significant portion of these business opportunities have not yet reached maturity, prompting the authors to provide specific observations and remarks regarding the viability challenges facing each sector within the wider hydrogen economy.
Emerging Technologies
Value Creation for Sustainable Development
2022
This book investigates a multitude of emerging technologies including 3D printing, 5G, blockchain, and many more to assess their potential for use to further humanity’s shared goal of sustainable development. Through case studies detailing how these technologies are already being used at companies worldwide, it explores how emerging technologies can be used to enhance progress toward each of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to guarantee economic growth even in the face of challenges such as climate change. To assemble this book, we explored the business models of 650 companies in order to demonstrate how innovations can be converted into value to support sustainable development. To ensure practical application, only technologies currently on the market and in use actual companies were investigated. This volume will be of great use to academics, policymakers, innovators at the forefront of green business, and anyone else who is interested in novel and innovative business models and how they could help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
